Rhode Island: Roger Williams, the founder of the colony, came to Rhode Island to escape the Massachusetts Bay colony and was greeted by natives. They only at first got along. Some of the settlers who followed William’s family started farms that were similar to plantations and had slaves on them. Providence, meaning “direction of God”, was a place of religious freedom. The colony was populated by Puritans, Quakers, Baptists, Anglicans, and Congregationalists. Religious freedom takes a new stand with variety welcome.

New Hampshire: Most settlers came to this colony for business and to expand or escape the puritans of the Massachusetts Bay colony. New Hampshire did not have an official religion due to this. Other puritans that were not trying to escape came for expansion in farm land. The natives did not like this expansion onto their territory but they held peace for a long time. Business takes a new stand for expantion and growth for the colonists.
